The robot gripping unit has a holding unit with front and rear grippers, and the holding unit can be introduced from a front space, which is in front of the seat back and above the seat cushion, into a gap which is formed between the seat back and the seat cushion. After the holding unit has been introduced into this gap the cylinder, which is located in the holding unit, is extended so that the grippers can assume their upright position and the seat is thus held at three positions, i.e. at the floor section and the front and rear, lower sections of the seat back.
