The starting point is a number of reels 1, 3 and 5 supplying the observe 2, the reverse 4 and the inner document or documents 6 of the communication units, and a variable printing stage is applied to those continuous webs which require this and, immediately afterwards, said webs are made to meet up, in superposition, continuous, marginal lines of adhesive having previously been applied thereto with heads 8 which also, optionally, provide pre- cut lines 10 immediately inside the bands of adhesive 9 in order, ultimately, to divide the multiple continuous web up by means of a cutting head 11 which also produces small incisions on the other two edges of each unit in order to define the perimeter closure of said unit. The internal documents 6 may, optionally, carry labels, a reply envelope or any other type of supplement. <IMAGE>
