An actuator (30) for a closure element at the outlet of a container (10) containing metal melt has a piston/cylinder unit (40), which is secured to the latter and controls the closure element via a linkage, with a valve block which comprises a control valve (55) and a short-circuit valve (55) for the manual actuation of the closure element. The piston/cylinder unit (40) is constructed in accordance with the invention as a doubleacting cylinder whose cylinder has a cylinder portion (46), which defines the working chamber (49) for the piston (45) sliding therein, and a cylinder portion (48), which is connected to it and includes the valve block. The latter cylinder portion and the piston rod (42') arranged therein are provided with a displacement sensor (60) whilst the piston rod (42) opposed to the piston (45) is coupled to the linkage to move the closure element (20). These two cylinder portions (46, 48) are further manufactured of aluminium. As a result of this and due to the fact that the said conduits and thus the valve block are integrated as a whole into the cylinder portions (46, 48), the considerable advantage with respect to the known solutions is produced that this piston/cylinder unit (40) is overall very light and furthermore very compact and is thus very small in its dimensions.
