Prepn. of N-(3',4'-dimethoxy cinnamoyl)anthranilic acid of formula (I) comprises reacting 3',4'-dimethoxycinnamic acid with anthranilic acid in an aprotic polar solvent in the presence of an iminium salt and an inorganic salt.
