PURPOSE:To omit the issuing and sticking jobs of bar code labels that are required for identification of the patient ID of an X-ray film. CONSTITUTION:A character area segmenting means 3 segments a character area out of a patient ID part based on the binary image data on the patient ID part which is generated a binary image data generator means 2. A character pattern extracting means 4 extracts the character pattern shown by the multilevel image data included in the character area segmented by the means 3. A character pattern learning part 51 sets the category-character pattern correspondence information on a correspondence information table 53 in a learning processing state. A character pattern recognizer part 52 refers to the table 53 to acquire the category corresponding to a character pattern and then recognize a patient ID based on the acquired category.
