A pattern is produced from a material which can be melted out, dissolved out and/or burnt out, which pattern can subsequently be provided with a ceramic shell (S) by coating with a ceramic slip and subsequent drying. After removal of the pattern, for example by melting out, the ceramic shell is fired and then a solidifiable material is cast into it to produce a composite body having a ceramic outer shell. For casting into the ceramic outer shell, metal, in particular steel, can be used. However, the ceramic shell (S) can also have a ceramic material cast into it, whereupon the entire structure is fired. The process of the invention is distinguished by the possibility of optimum construction and by the properties of the ceramic shell (S) of the composite body, which properties contribute, at a low proportion by weight, to a high flexural and torsional stiffness. The process of the invention is preferably used for the production of portals (travelling bridges) for positioning and placing systems. <IMAGE>
