A seal for a stopping and withdrawing head for use in a continuous casting plant extends into a gap which is present between the stopping and withdrawing head and the side walls of a continuous casting mould and has direct contact with the side surfaces of the stopping and withdrawing head and the mould side walls. A seal which can be produced in a simple manner and, in particular, can be mounted rapidly is characterised in that the seal continues upwards in the direction of the mould cavity at least up to the end face of the stopping and withdrawing head and has a covering part which at least partially covers the end face of the stopping and withdrawing head, the covering part lying exposed and uncovered in relation to the mould cavity of the continuous casting mould, and any cooling scrap which may have been introduced resting directly on the covering part of the seal.
