The propulsion system has an asynchronous electric motor (2) mechanically coupled to a wheel (3) of the vehicle. An accumulator (4) supplies the motor through a converter circuit (5). The converter circuit can control the flow of power to the motor.An internal combustion engine (7) drives a generator (8) that can supply the drive motor or recharge the accumulator. The accumulator recharging circuit has a second converter (9) to regulate the power delivered to the accumulator from the alternator. A control circuit produces regulating control signals according to electric power flow.
