A process for producing a carbon-containing gaseous treatment atmosphere in a thermal-treatment system, especially for treating ferrous materials, by introducing hydrocarbon compounds and air into a combustion chamber and delivering the combustion gases to the thermal-treatment system involves a) operating, in a first exothermal reaction stage, the combustion chamber with an excess air coefficient n < 1.2, the formation of soot being avoided, and b) admixing, in a second endothermal reaction stage, the combustion gases from the first reaction stage with at least one hydrocarbon compound in such an amount that H2O and CO2 contained in the combustion gases of the first reaction stage is converted, by means of a catalyst, into CO and H2, the heat of reaction from the first reaction stage being supplied, at least in part, to the second reaction stage.
