Apparatus for the catalytic detoxification of or soot removal from exhaust gases of internal combustion engines, having:

  a) housing (4) which is constructed from two component shells (4a, 4b) welded together along pairs (26) of welding flanges and has two open end regions (8) connected to an exhaust pipe and a passage for the flow of the exhaust gas between the end regions (8);
  b) two exhaust gas treatment bodies (6) mounted one behind the other in the direction of flow, at a mutual spacing in the housing (4), and through which the gas can flow;
  c) and a guard ring (14) of sheet metal which surrounds the outside of the space associated with the spacing between the two exhaust gas treatment bodies (6);
characterised in that
  d) the guard ring (14) has at least one sheet-metal tab (32), which projects between one pair (26) of welding flanges of the component shells (4a, 4b) of the housing and is welded there to the housing (4).
