A method for transmitting images at a low transmission rate via a transmission channel subject to interference, in which the image is coded at the transmitter end with an at least two-dimensional prediction by a one-bit DPCM coder and is decoded in a corresponding decoder at the receiving end. From the image reconstructed in the DPCM coder at the transmitter end, a residual error image, which is coded with an at least two-dimensional block coding and is decoded at a receiving end and added to the image decoded in the DPCM decoder at the receiving end, is formed by subtraction from the original image.
