A method for transmitting images at a low transmission rate via a transmission channel subject to interference, in which the image is coded at the transmitter end with an at least two-dimensional prediction by a one-bit DPCM coder and is decoded in a corresponding decoder at the receiving end. From the image reconstructed in the DPCM coder at the transmitter end, a residual error image, which is coded with an at least two-dimensional block coding and is decoded at a receiving end and added to the image decoded in the DPCM decoder at the receiving end, is formed by subtraction from the original image. The residual error image is subjected to a transformation coding, preferably a discrete cosine transform.
