The object of the invention is to achieve immediate use of the measuring device without prior outlay on equipment and convenient one-man operation while retaining high precision and fast collection and evaluation of the measurement results. The object is achieved on the basis of air-pressure measurement, the device for measuring height difference consisting of a stationary, open liquid container, a liquid-filled tube and a measuring head, and in that a liquid container (1) which can be fixed as desired in the measurement region and is connected to a measuring head (2) via a liquid-filled tube (3), the measuring head (2) containing a pressure sensor (4) and indicator electronics (5) with storage, comparison and signalling functions, while the liquid container (1) is equipped with a membrane (7) which separates the liquid column (6) of the measuring system from the atmosphere. This measuring device finds application in civil engineering, especially for determining the position of intended set edges. <IMAGE>
