An active matrix for liquid crystal displays has a multiplicity of image elements, a multiplicity of address buses and a multiplicity of data buses which run at right angles to the address buses, each address bus having a pair of spaced-apart address sub-buses and each data bus a pair of spaced-apart data sub-buses. Each image element has a pair of display electrodes. A first switching device is connected between each display electrode and a first address sub-bus of the pair of address sub-buses of a corresponding address bus and a corresponding data bus, while a second switching device is connected between a display electrode and a second address sub-bus of the pair of address sub-buses of the corresponding address bus and the corresponding data bus. Each data sub-bus is hence separated from the other data sub-bus via at least one display electrode. According to another aspect, the active matrix liquid crystal displays have a multiplicity of image elements which are arranged in rows and columns which run at right angles to each other. Each image element represents a corresponding colour of a multiplicity of colours, which together form a colour image element.
