PURPOSE: To provide a diagnostic device always receiving inputted alarms and calculating the critical value of an off-line alarm, based on the combination of the newest alarms. CONSTITUTION: In a fault diagnosing method concerning a monitoring object system including an alarming device, a first alarm group 30 being on-line alarms to monitor is selected and a signal obtained from the first alarm group 30 is processed to decide the presence/absence of the generation of a fault state to specify a fault source which can be related with the state (80). When there is at least one fault state, at least one other alarm selected from the alarm group at off-line is decided (82). Then a signal obtained from at least one other alarm is processed to more precisely decide a more probable fault source.
