PURPOSE: To lower the cost of the control function and to improve the reliability by controlling several functions for suppression of menu recording, etc., and synchronizing the control with a video signal displayed on a screen. CONSTITUTION: A storage device 32 consists of P identical circuits which constitute P identical pages, each corresponds to pixels of N rows by M columns of a video image, and can store at least M×N bits. Then the storage device 32 has its address specified by a row counter 33 and a column counter 34. Further, the storage device 32 receives an instruction signal from a data separator so as to store a subtitle when it is present. The output of the storage device 32 is connected to a decoding circuit 35, which separates signals different from the output P of the storage device 32. The separated signals are an instruction CV for displaying the subtitle or a menu on the receiver screen and a recording instruction CE for starting the storage of the subtitle in a video cassette recorder.
