PURPOSE:To improve an entire character recognition rate by decreasing the coupling error or separating error of character segmentation processing as much as possible corresponding to the overlap or contact of adjacent characters. CONSTITUTION:A standard character width W of a character pattern segmented from the image of a character picture inputted from a scanner is calculated (S2). When there is any character pattern for which a character width wi of the segmented character pattern is considerably different from the standard character width W(S3), the histogram by N pieces of segmented character patterns before and behind the character pattern is calculated (S4), and character segmentation processing is newly performed for the N pieces of character patterns based on the standard character width W and the histogram (S6). Character recognition is performed to the segmented character pattern (S7). |
