PURPOSE:To provide an optical anisotropy element and its production to improve the display contrast and view angle characteristics of the displayed color of a TN liquid crystal display element. CONSTITUTION:A liquid crystal display element consists of a liquid crystal cell CE consisting of two electrode substrates with a twisted nematic liquid crystal interposed, and two polarizer elements. An optical anisotropic element RF disposed between the liquid crystal cell CE and the polarizer element is a sheet having negative uniaxial property having the optical axis not perpendicular nore parallel to the sheet plane, for example, the optical axis is tilted by 10-40 deg. from the normal direction of the sheet plane. Thereby, phase difference for oblique incident light due to the liquid crystal cell is compensated with the phase difference of the optical anisotropy element RF. Thus, a liquid crystal display device without showing a view angle dependence can be obtd. |
