The waste water (effluent) to be purified is passed from bottom to top through a fluidised particle bed in a reactor vessel 1. Here it is desirable if the particle material can be adjusted in specific gravity, can be decreased in specific gravity and has an open-pored surface and the apparatus can be matched to this particle material. This is achieved by using crushed expanded clay as particle material and by furnishing the reactor vessel 1 longitudinally and with a tapering inlet region 2 having an end tube 8, into which fits a rotatable screw 7 above which is provided a non return valve 6. By using crushed expanded clay and the apparatus adapted thereto, improved adaptability to the particular waste water conditions and decreased energy consumption are achieved.
