PURPOSE:To produce a thermal recording material having high recording sensitivity, high whiteness and excellent recording quality. CONSTITUTION:A process preparing a coating soln. for a thermal color forming layer containing a solid dye precursor particle dispersion containing a substantially colorless electron donating dye precursor and a solid developer particle dispersion containing an electron acceptive developer generating the contact reaction with the dye precursor under heating to develop a color and a process applying the prepared coating soln. to one surface of a sheet like support to dry the same to form the thermal color forming layer are contained in the production of a thermal recording material. At the time of the preparation of at least one of the dye dispersion and the developer dispersion, a solid particle-containing raw material dispersion is sent into a dispersing machine under high pressure and divided into two passages in the dispersing machine and both dispersions are converted to high speed streams to be mutually collide at a high speed to grind solid particles.
