PURPOSE: To improve the fogging stability during the retention period of a photothermal photographic silver halide emulsion by incorporating vinyl sulfone and/orβ-halosulfone into the emulsion. CONSTITUTION: In the photothermal photographic element contg. a photosensitive silver halide, an organosilver-salt oxidizing agent and a reducing agent for silver ion especially during its retention period, fogging is reduced by adding vinyl sulfone and/or aβ-halosulfone. Namely, the fogging stability of photothermal photographic emuslion is increased by adding vinyl sulfones (CH2 CH-SO2 )n -L and/or aβ-halosulfonic acid (XCH2 CH2 -SO2 )n -L. In the formula, X is a halogen atom such as chlorine or bromine, (n) is 1, 2, 3 or 4, and L is an org. bonding group. Besides, the org. bonding group can be <=20C alkyl, alkene, aryl or the mixture of the aryl groups, etc.
