PURPOSE: To process postal items of addresses coexisting in horizontal and perpendicular directions by selecting the prescribed zone of quantized images before reading image information and transferring the information to an electronic apparatus and/or a video electronic apparatus and inserting the swiveled or discretely processed zone into original pictures in prescribed positions. CONSTITUTION: In the method for processing the postal items in which the address information arranged in the horizontal direction and the perpendicular direction coexists within a postal item sorter, the postal items are discretely supplied to an image scanner 1 along their long sides and the postal item images are quantized. The image information is then transferred to the electronic apparatus 2 and/or the video electronic apparatus 3 for the purpose of subsequent sorting processing. The prescribed zone BZ of the quantized images is selected and is swiveled at an angle of 90 deg. or discretely processed before the image information is read and is transferred to the electronic apparatus 2 and/or the video electronic apparatus 3.
