<p>PURPOSE:To improve the contrast ratio, and to widen an angle of visibility, and to prevent the generation of afterimage. CONSTITUTION:A liquid crystal display device has a substrate 1 and a first substrate 10, which is arranged on the substrate 1 and which is provided with plural scanning lines and plural signal lines 16 arranged in the row direction and the column direction and active elements and common electrodes 11 arranged in matrix and electrically connected to the scanning lines 14 and the signal lines 16 on or under thereof through an insulating layer, and the substrate 1 as a second substrate is provided with picture element electrodes 5 arranged in matrix on the substrate 1.
