PURPOSE:To provide a process for producing a pitch-based carbon fiber having excellent openability and high strand strength and free from fluffing. CONSTITUTION:A carbonized and/or graphitized carbon fiber is produced from an anisotropic pitch by melt-spinning the anisotropic pitch, collecting the formed pitch single fibers, winding the pitch fiber tow under a tension of <=500g/mm<2>, subjecting the wound tow to infusibilization treatment and a primary carbonization treatment in wound state, subjecting the resultant primary carbonized fiber to secondary carbonization treatment in a steam-containing inert gas atmosphere while linearly transporting the fiber under tension to form a carbon fiber and, as necessary, carrying out the tertiary carbonization and/or graphitization treatment of the carbon fiber in an inert gas atmosphere free from steam. |
