<p>PURPOSE:To produce a substituted cumyl chloride useful as a production intermediate for pharmaceuticals and agrichemicals under mild condition in a short time in high yield. CONSTITUTION:A substituted cumyl chloride of formula II (e.g. 3,5dichlorocumyl chloride) is produced by reacting a substituted alpha-methylstyrene of formula I (X is halogen or electron-attracting group non-reactive with hydrogen chloride; (n) is 1-5) (e.g. 3,5-dichloro-alpha-methylstyrene) with hydrogen chloride or a compound capable of releasing hydrogen chloride (e.g. thionyl chloride and oxalyl chloride) in the presence of a silicon oxide compound (preferably silica gel produced from sodium silicate) at 0-50 deg.C (preferably 20-30 deg.C). The amount of the silicon oxide compound in the reactional system is >=1wt.% (preferably 5-20wt.%) based on the starting compound and the particle size of the silicon oxide compound is preferably 70-400 mesh. The reaction is promoted by the use of silicon oxide having fine particle size.</p> |
