The ink jet printer has a print head (3) which emits ink droplets, and a device for causing the relative displacement of a sheet of paper w.r.t. the head. The head includes a cleaning device having a cover/hood (4) which cooperates with the head when the latter is not operational. The cover is connected to a vacuum pump by a flexible tube (5) which causes a suction effect on the ink jet nozzles of the head.The pump is of the linear peristaltic type, and is connected to the cleaning hood by a passage comprising the flexible tube, which cooperates with the linearly displaceable element and presses against the tube. To clean the head a slide (10) is displaced along a guide (11) and carries a presser wheel (9) causing a depression in the tube and generating a suction effect at the hood.
