A coating process for colouring the insulation e.g. polyethylene etc. of a continuous electrical conductor or fibre-optic cable (1) has a bath (4) containing the liquid coating material (5) through which the conductor or cable (1) is transported via the tensioning rollers (6,7) as it unwinds from the drum (2) to the storage drum (3).The conductor/cable (1) is subjected to an ultrasonic field (8) from the sources (10,11) which affords improved wetting of the insulation whilst in the bath (4).A stripping gauge (9) removes surplus coating before curing in a drying/hardening stage (12).
