<p>A computer filing system for accessing files and data according to user-designated criteria. The system allows the user to define a virtually unlimited number of hybrid folders. The hybrid folders allow access to files that are described using terms selected by the operator. Hybrid folders can be implemented over, and used in addition to conventional hierarchical structured directories, or they may replace the directories if used in the operating system. During search and retrieval two methods are employed to ensure the user defines a filter which will always find at least one file. First the user chooses the words, describing categories, from pick lists (56), making mistyping impossible. Second while the user builds the search filter, category selections resulting in an empty set are excluded from the pick lists. File names returned by the search are displayed (52) for selection.</p> |
