A mass storage subsystem comprises a mounting structure having a plurality of similar mounting slots. A number of disk storage modules, are mounted in the slots. The system also includes at least one dedicated search processor module. The search processor module is mounted in one of the mounting slots in the same way as one of the disk modules. All the modules are interconnected by an SCSI bus. Thus, the search processor module physically fits where it fits architecturally, which eases installation and integration problems. <IMAGE>
