Ozone treatment of effluent treatment off gases, - especially to remove hydrogen sulphide and methane

Process for purification of exhaust gas, esp. for cleaning-up air contaminated with methane and hydrogen sulphide (sewer gas), is novel in that the gas/air is fed into a water-filled reactor, and that the water/exhaust gas, particularly water/exhaust air-mixture is contacted with ozone. Reactor (1) contains water to level (4), a contaminated gas feed inlet (2) with porous frit distributor (8), and an ozonated air distributor (16). Ozone is generated from atmospheric air (10), which is dried (11), and passed through the ozone generator (12), and then fed via the hollow shaft (13) to the distributor (3). USE/ADVANTAGE - Removal of methane and hydrogen sulphide from the exhaust air/gas mixture discharged to atmosphere from sewage/effluent treatment installations. Avoids need for expensive adsorbents, the need for regular replacement or regeneration of these - with the remaining opportunity for release of the adsorbed gases from the adsorbents to atmosphere.
