A low temperature limit for battery powered thermostats for energizing and d e- energizing the heating system when the bat- tery (15) can no longer operate the thermostat (1). The thermostat (1) comprises a battery powered thermostat control (10) for en- ergizing and de-energizing the heating system and a low temperature limit (2 4) electrically connected in parallel with the battery powered thermostat control (10). The battery powered thermostat control (10) disables a controllable switch (20) and, thereby, the low temperature limit bimetal switch (24) when the battery is charged. When the battery (15) is discharged, it enables the low tem- perature bimetal switch limit (24). Thereby, when the thermostat is no longe r operational, the low temperature limit (24) energizes the heating system when the ambient temperature present on the thermostat (1 ) is below a preselected temperature.
