A swage type fastener (10) including a swageable collar member (32) having a pintail member (38) secured thereto to define a pintailed collar (14); the pintailed collar (14) is operable to be secured to a stud or pin member (12) by an installation tool which applies a relative axial force between the pintail member (38) and collar member (32) to cause a swage anvil (58) to swage the collar member (32) into a locking groove portion (24) on the pin member (12) and then to sever the pintailed member (38) from the installed collar member (32); the stud or pin member (12) can have a gripping groove construction (29) at its free end to grip the collar member (32) at initial swage and relatively low swage loads and to resist the installation tool pulling the collar member (32) into the swage anvil (58) instead of swaging it onto the stud or pin member under the subsequently high swage loads.
