PURPOSE:To produce a sintered compact of silicon nitride having excellent thermal shock resistance. CONSTITUTION:A molded article is prepared from (a) silicon nitride powder, (b) sintering auxiliary powder comprising Y2O3 or Y2O3 and one or more selected from Al2O3, Yb2O3, HfO2, Er2O3 and Cr2O3, (c) ceramic fibers and/or ceramic powder prepared by thermally decomposing polysilazane and the molded article is cured in a nitrogen-containing atmosphere to give a sintered compact having formed very small pores at parts of ceramic fibers and/or ceramic powder. The ceramic fibers or ceramic powder has a composition of preferably 45-60wt.% Si, 5-30wt.% N, 5-20wt.% C and 1-30wt.% O. |
