New polymers for composites - prepd. from poly:arylene siloxane(s) and unsatd. radical polymerisable monomers.

Polymers prepd. by radical polymerisation of a monomer(s) of formula (I) and opt. a monomer(s) of formula (II) with an aromatic polyarylenesiloxane of formula (III) dissolved in a solvent, are claimed. In the formula, R1, R2 = H, -COOH, or 1-18C alkyl, esp. (ethyl)hexyl, octyl, 3,5,5-trimethylhexyl, (do)decyl, hexyldecyl, octadecyl, lauryl, isobornyl, (4-tert-butyl)cyclohexyl, (m)ethyl, propyl (iso)butyl, butyl or pentyl; R3 = H or methyl; R4 = H, 1-20C alkyl, 2-hydroxypropyl, glycidyl, -(CH2CH2-O)n, -(CH2)m-OH or -(CH2)2-O-CO-(CH2)xOH; n =1-5; m = 3-18, x = 5-10; R5-R8 = H, 1-20C alkyl esp. (m)ethyl, propyl, butyl or pentyl, 1-6C alkenyl, e.g. vinyl, aryl, e.g. (4-methyl)phenyl, -COOH, -CHO or -COOR', or R6 and R8 may form a -CO-O-CO- carboxylic acid anhydride gp; R' = alkyl, esp. (m)ethyl; R9, R1`0 = 1-12C alkyl, opt. substd. 6-14C aryl or opt. substd. vinyl, esp. 1-3C alkyl or phenyl; R11-R14 = H, 1-3C alkyl or opt. substd. 6-14C aryl; X = -C(CH3)2-, -C(CF3)2-, S, SO2, -CH2-, or an opt. (pref. alkyl substd) m = 0-1; and N = 2-500, pref. 3-200. USE - The polymers are useful for giving a hydrophobic finish to technical fibres and textiles, or as components for composites.
