The signal and data transmission device allows control and monitoring of an underwater operating plant (1) from a control station above the water surface. The signal and data lines are contained in a communications umbilical (5), which is separate to the umbilical (4) for the pressurised air and/or electrical drive energy and which is linked to an underwater device (6) coupled to the underwater operating plant via a further line (7), or a radio link. Pref. the underwater device is provided by an underwater vehicle having a camera and a robot tool (8) for establishing the connection with the underwater operating plant. ADVANTAGE - Maintains communication link upon loss of main umbilical.
