A fence is composed of steel lattice mats (M1, M2) which in turn are composed of horizontal (H1, H2, H3, H4) and vertical rods (V1, V2) soldered at their intersections, forming meshes of any desired sizes. The fence is formed by positioning two adjacent steel lattice mats (M1, M2) in their set position according to their height and mutual distance by means of special connecting members (K1) made of steel or plastics. Such a fence connecting member (K1) has recesses (A11, A12, A13, A14) for enclosing the vertical rods (V1, V2). The recesses (A11, A12, A13, A14) partially extend up to the middle of the clamping material. The reduced flexural resistance of the fence connecting members (K1) in the area of the recesses (A11, A12, A13, A14) is compensated by arranging the recesses obliquely to the plane of the mats or by horizontal rods (H1, H4) which extend beyond the vertical rod (V1, V2) at the edge of the mat and which thus form a support for the various areas of the fence connecting members (K1). The fence connecting members may be alternatively set at opposite positions on different horizontal planes or may be superimposed on a horizontal plane.
