Metal and plastics recovery from hydrocarbon-contg. scrap - esp. filters, oil cans, etc. by comminution, sepn. and washing steps

In metal and plastics recovery from scrap oil- and/or hydrocarbon-contg. containers and filters, in which opt. polyethylene-free plastics components are sepd., the novelty is that (i) the containers and filters are comminuted as separate fractions and subjected to ferrous metal sepn.; (ii) the plastics fraction and the ferrous metal-contg. fraction are washed with surfactant-contg. water; and (iii) the wash water is subjected to (partial) purificn. and (partially) returned to the process. USE/ADVANTAGE - For recovery of a ferrous metal-contg. fraction and a plastics fraction from scrap oil- and/or hydrocarbon-contg. containers and filters (claimed), e.g. oil cans, oil tanks and fuel, air and oil filters. The vol. and wt. of materials requiring disposal are reduced to a minimum by recovering the reusable metals and plastics for further processing and by sepg. hydrocarbons (e.g. oil and fuel) and contaminants (e.g. heavy metals and soot) opt. for energy recovery.
