An anesthesia gas delivery system including a patient circuit (86) implemented primarily by a detachable structural portion (82) and a control system (90) implemented primarily by a permanent structural portion (84). The control system includes a subsystem for preventing gas flow out of the overflow tube until the patient reservoir is full except when a pediatric breathing circuit is being used.
