Photochromic acridone derivatives, process for their preparation, and their use Compounds of the formula I <IMG> (I), in which X and Y are each N or CR6, or X is CR6 and Y is N; R1 is C6-C14aryl which is unsubstituted or substituted by C1-C12alky1, C1-C12alkoxy, C1-C12alkylthio, C1-C12alkylsulfinyl, C1-C12alkylsulfonyl, phenyl, benzyl, phenylsulfinyl, benzylsulfinyl, phenylsulfonyl, benzylsulfonyl -CN, -CF3, halogen, -SO3R7,-CO-R7, -CO2R7, -CON(R8)2 or -N(R8)2. where the phenyl and the phenyl in the benzyl are unsubstituted or substituted by C1-C4alkyl or C1-C4alkoxy, R2, R3, R4 and R5, independently of one afther, are H, -CO2R, or halogen; R6 is H, unsubstituted or C1-C4alkyl-, C1-C4alkoxy-, C1-C4alkylthio-, -CO2R7-orhalogen-substituted C1-C18alkyl, C3-C8cycloalkyl, C6-C14aryl or C7-C20aralkyl, or both R6 radicals together are the CH=CH-CH=CH- group if X and Y are each CR6, where thisgroup is unsubstituted or substituted as defined for R6; R7 is H, C1-C18alkyl, cyclohexyl, cyclopentyl, phenyl, C1-C12alkylphenyl, benzyl or C1-C12alkylbenzyl; and the R8 radicals, independently of one another, are H, C1-C18alkyl, cyclohexyl, cyclopentyl, phenyl, C1-C12alkylphenyl, benzyl or C1-C12alkylbenzyl, or one R8 is H and the other R8 is the -CO-R9 group, in which R9, independently, is as defined for R7, or both R8 radicals together are tetramethylene, pentamethylene, 3-oxa-1,5-pentylene or the radical of the formula -CH2CH2-N(C1-C6alkyl)CH2CH2-. The compounds are irreversibly photochromic and are suitable as colour indicators, as photoswitchable colour filters or as photosensitizers.
