3-indolepyruvic acid and derivatives thereof in the form of salts, esters and amides are compounds pharmaceutically active as agents for antagonising disturbances of the central nervous system, such as epilepsy, cerebral ischemia, ictus and Alzheimer's disease, through a mechanism of action which raises the level of kynurenic acid in the brain.
