PURPOSE: To improve a method for managing the copy of the soft copy book of a structured document. CONSTITUTION: The publishing company of a soft copy book includes copyright fee payment information in either the structured document text of the book or a copyright fee payment information file accompanied with the book. A user uses a soft copy book reading program 35 in a work station 10 in order to read the book from a storage disk. When the user inputs a command for copying the book to a writing enabling recording medium 46 such as a magnetic disk, inputs a command for printing the hard copy of the book by a printer 44, or inputs command for transmitting the copy of the book through a modem, a copyright fee payment program 45 intercepts those copy commands, and interrupts those copying operations. The copyright fee payment program 45 presents the copyright fee payment information stored in the book text or the file accompanied with the book to the user.
