A telescopic umbrella having telescopic ribs 5, 6, a main slider 11 lockable to the stick 1, 2, main struts 9 pivoted to the rib parts 6 and to the main slider, an auxiliary slider 15, auxiliary struts 12 pivoted to the main struts and to the auxiliary slider 15 to which a spring-loaded catch is connected, the catch, during initial opening of the umbrella canopy, temporarily engaging a slot 27 in the stick wall to arrest movement of the auxiliary slider and consisting of a two-armed lever 20 having a nose 22 retained in the slot 27 to produce a torque transmitted by the shoulder 24 to an auxiliary strut 12 to swing the strut to a splayed position so that the ribs do not telescope. The heads 18 of the auxiliary struts 12 are pivoted in recesses 19 in the auxiliary slider 15 by a wire 16, the lever 20 being mounted between two adjacent struts and having a nose 22 to engage the slot 27, a slot 21 in which the wire 16 is engaged, and a hook 23 engaged by a spring ring 25 so as to tend to rotate the lever anti-clockwise but is unable to do so when the strut 12 is parallel to the stick. On arrest of the slider, in opening the umbrella canopy, torque in the lever arm a is transmitted by the lever arm b and abutment by the shoulder 24 swings the strut away from the stick. In closing the canopy the inclined surface 28 slides along the edge of the slot and during telescoping of the stick the presence of the part 2 of the stick behind the slot 27 prevents arrest of the auxiliary slider. In a modification the lever is mounted on the auxiliary strut by a pivot pin remote from the pivotal connection of the strut to the auxiliary slider and a bent wire spring tends to bring the nose of the catch into the slot in the stick. In a further modification, shown in Fig. 10, a spring bar 40 is clamped by notches 41 within one or more of the channel-section auxiliary struts 12a and tends to spring towards the stick axis, the head 42 having a nose 45 engaging a slot 49 in the stick and a slot 43 in which the pivot pin 44 slides. The axis of the torque produced when the edge 46 engages the top of the slot 49 is coincident with the pivot 44 and splays the auxiliary strut 12a until the nose is released from the strut.
