Novel 2, 4, 5-Trifluoroisophthalonitrile is useful as a starting material for the manufacture of medicines, agrichemcials and other industrial chemicals; and particularly for the production of 2, 4, 5trifluoroisophthalic acid by the hydrolysis of 2, 4, 5trifluoroisophthalonitrile with sulphuric acid under specified conditions. 2, 4, 5-trifluoroisophthalonitrile is prepared by the reaction of tetrafluoroisophthalonitrile with a metal hydride at a temperature of between -80 and 100.degree.C in an aprotic solvent.
