A co-axial cylindrical brushless DC motor has an internal cylindrical stator (16) and an external rotor (11) containing permanent magnets (27). The cylindrical stator (16) has a substrate (24) of reinforced plastics in the shape of a reel having outer flanges (24C, 24D) surrounding a shallow recess (24E) containing one or more lengths of strip (3) formed from a soft magnetic material. The strip (3) has a width equivalent to the width of the recess (24E). The strip is wound about the substrate (24) and has an outer surface flush with the outer circumference of the flanges (24C, 24D). The strip (3) is wound in a spiral similar to the shape of a clock spring. Wound poles (25) are superimposed on the strip (3) and extend over the flanges (24C, 24D) of the substrate. |
