The present invention relates to the use of thiadiazoles of the type <IMAGE> where R1, R2 and R3 are - hydrogen, - alkyl groups having 1-4 carbon atoms, - substituted alkyl groups having 1-4 carbon atoms, substituted by halogen, an alkoxy group, carboxyl group, hydroxyl group or nitro group, - CN, halogen or NO2, or - COOR where R is H or alkyl groups having 1-4 carbon atoms, and the use of synergistically acting combinations of thiadiazoles with other biocidally active substances as biocides for the protection of materials. The compounds according to the invention, which are distinguished by a broad biocidal spectrum of action, can be used, in particular, as wood preservatives for preventing the destruction of wood by fungi or bacteria, for the biocidal finishing of plastics, and as preservatives or disinfectants. The recommended use concentrations are 0.01 to 15 per cent by weight, preferably 0.1 to 3.0 per cent by weight. |
