Frames are constructed from members of uniformly profiled transverse section having (a) a rigid inner core comprising components such as the channel shaped supporting members 42, 43, of laminated wood, pressed shavings or fibres of metal or plastics bound with binding agents and, at places lightly coated pieces 44 also of solid similar material and distance pieces 45 in which holes 46 receive corner connecting elements or closing or fixing elements, or these latter may be accommodated as at 47 within the space of the supporting elements 42, 43, and (b) a plastic covering 55 of one or more layers, e.g. of resin reinforced with glass fibres, wholly enveloping the core and grooves 58 being provided down one pair of longitudinal sides forming a transverse section having a centre of symmetry and these grooves 58 accommodate mountings strips 61 for glazing 60, draught &c. excluders, or stopping stripes 66 or venetian blinds 70. In the construction shown in Fig. 3 a distance piece 52 is lined with a removable lining strip 54 of paper, textile &c so that the outer envelope 55 will not adhere to the piece 52 during assembly, the piece being withdrawn during the formation of a mitre joint and shortened so that on replacing a space 24 Fig. 9 is left at the mitred end to accommodate one leg of a right-angled joining piece 21 Fig. 9. This piece 21 preferably comprises an electrical resistance heater to which connection is made through hole 25 and on heating melts the covering of polyester resin, reinforced by glass fibres, which fills the recesses 23 and hardens to give a permanent connection between the connector and the pieces 18. Compound members may be formed by securing together two single members 35, 36 Fig. 11 by an intermediary piece 37 having tongue and groove connections or plain faces or complementary faces of the single members may be secured together. A shock and stress absorbing envelope e.g. of cardboard or foam material may be glued or pasted between the plastic envelope 55 and the core and a metal foil may be positioned beneath the cardboard &c. This stress-absorbing layer may consist of short lengths of man-made fibres wetted by adhesive agents, pre-polymerized and then laid upon the core and thereafter polymerized to a suitable degree of hardness by using pressure and/or heat.</p> |
