A method for detecting the passage of luminous objects, in partic. molten metal comprises: (a) forming an optical image on a photo-electric transducer of a zone (10) between two planes (12,13) by means of a light source (241); (b) converting the light from the object passing through the zone (10) to an electrical quantity; and (c) transmitting this electrical quantity as functional information.The device used for the detection of the passage of a luminous body is also claimed and consists of an adjustable focus lens, a photo-electric transducer (3), a converter (2), a comparator (5) a buffer stage (6), a power supply (7) and a light source (241).The application of the method to the instantaneous detection of the arrival of a jet of molten metal is also claimed.
