Dry basic thermal insulation coating for molten metal - is free from binder and has high thermal insulation properties

Dry basic coating material for molten metals consists of (A) 80-98 wt.% coarse dolomite, coarse magnesite, sintered dolomite and/or sintered magnesite of grain size 0.1-4.0 mm and (B) 2-20 wt.% expanded, vulcanised glass, expanded phyllosilicate and/or expanded mica of grain size 0.1-4.0 mm. The grain sizes of the components (A) and (B) are pref. 0.4-1.5 mm, and the loose density is 0.7-1.2 g/cm3. Component (B) is pref. expanded vermiculite or pearlite, and (A) is pref. Fe-free coarse magnesite. USE/ADVANTAGE - Coating of pig iron and steel in ladles, tundishes and moulds. The coating is dry and free from dust without having to employ a binding agent.
