A versatile mounting is provided for a bearing cup or race located in a yoke arm of a universal joint. Recessed surfaces are peripherally positioned around the closed end of the bearing cup and are precisely formed to provide first locating surfaces for the cup. The main surface of the closed end of the cup is also precisely formed to provide a second locating surface for the cup in a plane spaced from the plane of the first locating surfaces. The cup can be mounted in a yoke arm or ear by threaded fasteners which are engaged in threaded holes in the arm peripherally spaced about a bore therein in which the bearing cup is to be located. Annular locating surfaces below the heads of the fasteners are provided to engage the recessed first locating surfaces on the bearing cup to accurately position the bearing cup in the bore of the yoke arm. The bearing cup can also be mounted in a bore of a yoke arm by retaining rings or the like which engage the second main locating surface on the closed end of the bearing cup to accurately locate the bearing cup in a different position relative to the yoke arm. The mounting can also include an adapter sleeve to receive a bearing cup and enable it to be located in a larger bore of an existing yoke arm. The mounting can be in kit form to replace bearing cups of several different yoke arms with bearing cups of one size so that one replacement kit can be used for several different existing universal joints.
