PURPOSE:To obtain a part mounting device which is able to accurately recognize the two-dimensional position of a surface mounting part even if it varies in thickness or height and to mount a part at an accurate height in a shorter time. CONSTITUTION:A part mounting device is equipped with a height controlling means which controls a part in holding height so as to set a distance l from a part imaging reference plane H at an optical recognizing position to the imaging plane L of the optical recognizing means 51 equal to the focal distance of the optical recognizing means 51 basing on the previously inputted data of a part 42 before the part 42 held by a mounting head 11 reaches a position where it is recognized by an optical recognizing means 51.
