The stage has a hydraulic ram, generating an axial relative motion between meshing gears. A first shaft (1) carries two rotary and axially fixed helical gears (2,3) of same hand, meshing with two such gears (4,5) on a second shaft (6). Only one gear (5) on the second shaft is axially slidable. The hydraulic ram (12) are held on the second shaft, with its pistons (11) abutting the front side (10) of the axially slidable gears with a force sufficient to generate flank contact between the gear pairs (2,4, 3,5). USE/ADVANTAGE - Gear stage used in machine tool gearbox, with low-cost, compact design, without backlash.
